Half-life |
Planet Half-life |
BOTS
|
The Game of all games.
This is my absolute favorite game of all time.
Halflife is a sweet game that grabs you into the story line and is unlike
anyother first-person-shooter known. If you haven't already played it, you
should really go out and but it. Trust me, you'll like it even if you don't
play computer games. This game is like walking through a movie.
It has spawned off
many
MODs
[modifications] which are basically different games using the half-life engine. And almost
all MODs are free. They are made by "amateur" programmers/mappers/ etc. but just because
they have
an "amateur" label doesn't mean you'll be playing a crappy game. Take Counter0Strike
for example. It was made by a couple of guys that just wanted
to make a game that would suit their tastes. Counter-Strike is now a retail [has
a price tag] game that's been endorsed by Valve Software and can be found on a
shelf anywhere games are sold.
Some very mentionable MODs are:
Team Fortress Classic
Frontline Force
Counter-Strike

Team Fortress Classic |
Planet Fortress
This MOD was originally released in 1996 by Australian based Team Fortress Software.
Then after it's popularity grew, the guys that created it got a job offer from Valve
Software and they took it. Now TFC is for Halflife and you can get it by
updating
Halflife to the latest patch.
You play as one of nine different player classes, such as Medic, Soldier, Pyro, and
sniper. Each classes was differnt abilities and weaknesses. If you have Halflife and
you haven't played this yet, you really should go download it.

Official Frontline Force Site
Frontline Force is fairly new to the number of Halflife MODs out there. I've played it and
it can be very addicting.
In Front Line Force the players are divided into two teams: Attackers and Defenders. The object
for the Attackers is to capture various Capture Points spread throughout the map. The object for
the Defenders is to defend those points. Once a point is captured by the Attackers it cannot be
taken back. The round is over when either the Attackers capture all the Capture Points or when the
round time runs out, in which case the Defenders win. After the a team wins, the roles of are switched.
If you were previously attacking, you are now defending, and vice versa.
The weapons, player models, and maps are all based on realistic situations, but the damage system and
the way the game itself plays is NOT based on realism. Players do NOT die in one or two shots, but rather
it takes a few shots from even the strongest gun to kill them, similar to Team Fortress Classic or other
traditional multiplayer games. When a player dies, he does NOT sit out the rest of the round like in other
games, rather he will respawn after a designated number of seconds has elapsed.

Counter-Strike |
CS Nation |
CS BOTS
This MOD sure has come a hell of a long way. It
was realsed as a BETA slightly over a year ago and has slowly grown
into the world most played online game - beating Quake III and
Unreal Tournament combined. That is a very high achievment for any
game, let alone a MOD. I has gotten numerous awards from magazines,
sites, etc. It is now a stand-alone [doesn't require Halflife] retail
game by help from Valve Software, but this doesn't mean you have to
buy it to play it. If you have Halflife, you can
download it
for free.
CS is team-based featuring one team playing the role of the terrorist
and the other team playing the role of the counter-terrorist. Each side has
access to different guns and equipment, as well as different abilities.
Maps have different goals such as: hostage rescue, assassination, bomb
defusion, Terrorist escape, etc.
